Arthritis can be an extremely debilitating disorder affecting the joints anywhere in the body. It is caused primarily by the degeneration of cartilage cushioning the bone-to-bone connections. It is very common in the hands, knees and back but can be between any articulated joint. Acupuncture has been used extensively to treat the pain of arthritis. Most recently, Dr. Marc Hochberg of the University of maryland presented his reseaerch findings at the American College of Rheumatology that proved acupuncture to be clinically important in the relief of pain with arthritis (knee osteoarthritis).

Acupuncture theory and Chinese medical theory  describes arthritis as a Bi Disorder, which means blockage disorder of the channels. It is subdivided into categories of the type of conditions that aggravate the arthritis. The main types are Cold, Damp, Hot, Wind and Boney Bi. Cold Bi is aggravated by cold weather or application od cold. Damp Bi is aggravated by damp conditions and is a certain spot or spots and doesn't move about the body. Hot Bi is aggravated by heat and includes inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is in this category. Wind Bi moves around the body from one joint to another like wind. Boney Bi is arthritis that has caused a disfiguration of the bones of the joint.

Acupuncture treats arthritis by simultaneously treating the underlying disorder and treating pain at the affected joints both at the joints and distant  or distal points. Arthritis suffers should definitely consider adding acupuncture to their regimen.
