There are three major causes of chronic cramping muscles: inadequate
blood supply, nerve impingement and depletion of minerals in the muscle
tissues. Additionally, acute muscle cramps can be caused by overuse,
dehydration or straining. Many people, especially the elderly, suffer
from calf cramping at night. |

People with chronic muscle cramps should assure they have adequate intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium and are taking the recommended daily dosage in their daily vitamins.
Acupuncture has effective therapies for cramping of the muscles of the legs. Treatment may occur in the back region if there is impingement and vertebral stenosis in order to relax the back muscles to reduce impingement. Acupuncture also has treatments to increase leg circulation.
Additionally, muscle cramps in the back or muscle spasm is a very common problem and can become chronic. Please refer to the page on back pain for further information.
