Depression is one of the five most common conditions that Americans seek alternative care outside the mainstream medical community. A new pilot study by psychologist John Allen of The University of Arizona in Tucson and acupuncturist Rosa Schnyer suggests that acupuncture may prove to be at least as effective in the treatment of depression as psychotherapy or drug therapy. Many have credited acupuncture with eliminating their depression and some with saving their lives.

Acupuncturists treat depression as they do other emotional disorders. They adhere to the Chinese Medical theoretical belief that there is no distinction or separation between mind and body. Thus, depression is treated within a constellation of other symptoms or signs that a client may have. Systems that are treated are the Liver, Heart, Spleen and Kidney.

Additionally, clients are urged to adopt lifestyle changes including an increase in exercise, elimination of alcohol and fatty or fried foods and not to repress or overly emphasize their emotions.

Depression is one of the disorders that clients can have remarkable and long-lasting results from the treatment with acupuncture. For many years, I have worked with people under high degrees of stress and anxiety. Clients suffering from severe addiction problems, clients with terminal illnesses, and clients with mental health issues are some of the areas in which I have specialized in my career. Acupuncture offers unique treatments to reduce both stress and anxiety and identify underlying disharmonies. Please also refer to the pages on stress and anxiety and insomnia which are closely related to depression.
