Headaches are one of the most common complaints
of pain. Usually, we take aspirin or another over-the-counter medicine
to dull or eliminate the pain, perhaps only temporarily. Long-term use
of these medications can damage the stomach, kidneys or liver depending
on which medication is used. Additionally, they do not treat the
underlying causes of headache.

The
causes of headaches are sometimes difficult to determine. Nine out of
ten headaches are caused by muscular tension in the head, neck and
shoulders causing dull pain in the temples. Inflammation may also be
the cause, such as sinusitis. Migraines and their cousins cluster
headaches are thought to be caused by either the dilation or
constriction of blood vessels. Hormones, allergies, intolerance to
certain foods, eye strain and poor diet may also be important in
headache diagnosis. Care should be taken with recurrent and/or severe
headaches and a physician should be consulted.

Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of headaches, both in the
treatment of pain and addressing the underlying causes. Acupuncture
can reduce inflammation, relieve tension and modify and harmonize
blood vessels. Headaches are not a condition that one has to live
with.
